Let’s begin our Arctic adventure in Ilulissat, a small but captivating village on Greenland’s west coast, about 350 kilometers (220 miles) north of the Arctic Circle.
With a population of around 5,149 as of 2025, it is Greenland’s third-largest settlement. Sled dogs roam freely alongside locals, giving the village its distinctive Arctic charm. Its compact layout makes walking the easiest and most enjoyable way to explore.
The village is surrounded by rugged mountains and icy fjords, making it a paradise for nature lovers and photographers. Whether we are strolling along the waterfront or sitting at a café watching icebergs drift by, Ilulissat gives us a unique glimpse of life in the Arctic.

The Meaning Behind the Name

The name “Ilulissat” translates to icebergs in Greenlandic, perfectly capturing the scenery. In Danish, it is also called “Isbjerge.” Everywhere we look, enormous icebergs float in Disko Bay, creating scenes that feel almost magical. The town’s name hints at the incredible natural wonders waiting to be explored, promising a journey filled with breathtaking views.

Ilulissat Icefjord: A UNESCO World Heritage Site

The Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage site, lies just a short walk or boat ride from the village. It is one of the most productive glaciers in the Northern Hemisphere, constantly calving huge icebergs that drift into the sea.
- Opening hours: Open year-round; summer (June–September) is ideal for walking and boat tours.
- Ticket prices: Walking along the fjord is free. Guided boat tours cost $80–$120 per person for 2–3 hours, often including hot drinks and commentary.
- Tips: Wear layered clothing, waterproof boots, and sunglasses—the ice reflects sunlight strongly.
The fjord has well-marked hiking trails offering spectacular viewpoints. Whether we hike for 1 hour or 3, each turn presents a different perspective of the massive icebergs and the surrounding mountains.
